NCKU announced in August 2019 the establishment of Taiwan's first "School of Computing", which is currently actively being developed and recruiting talent. NCKU held the 2019 Workshop on Future Computing (WFC) on December 16th and 17th with 75 prominent members in attendance, all of whom are prominent members in academia or elites in the industry, to discuss the prospects and future development of the field of computing.

The main organizer, NCKU’s Executive President Dr. Cheng-Wen Wu, pointed out that the "School of Computing" at NCKU will be a break from the mold of the existing faculty structure in that it will be primarily be a cross-field research degree program. The NCKU program will be working closely with universities in Japan and Singapore to set up courses that offer international academic credits. In addition, centers for AI research in different fields will also be set up to enhance the research and development efforts in the field of computing. In addition, the Macronix Innovation Center will drive the cultivation of talent for these fields and make NCKU into an integral center for research as well as a premier developer of talent.

A delegation from NCKU traveled to San Francisco to recruit talent in the field of computing in early November. WFC, the planning of which had been in the works for the better half of the year, was held on December 16th and 17th. There were 22 professors from multiple fields as well as 14 overseas scholars and senior executives in the industry in attendance.

Dr. Cheng-wen Wu said that in addition to all the knowledge sharing and exchanges, the purpose of the WFC also served as a pilot run for the talent recruitment for the NCKU School of Computing. Another purpose for the WFC was to create an industrial chain. NCKU’s School of Computing will collaborate with other universities in the same time zone, such as those in Japan and Singapore, to set up cross-national courses so that students from different countries can take courses across universities, have exchanges with multinational faculty, and participate in international research. NCKU hopes to involve more countries in the future.

NCKU president Dr. Huey-Jen Jenny Su is welcoming all to come to National Cheng Kung University in Tainan. She pointed out that from an educational standpoint, students need to be prepared for the challenges of the future, and computing is one of them. Macronix, the global leader in non-volatile memory integrated components which is headed by Miin Wu, donated NT$420 million to National Cheng Kung University to build a "NCKU Macronix Center for Innovation", which will provide a new type of space for innovative teaching and research – a precursor of the university of the future.
