Tainan-based National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) was ranked the 63rd in the world and the 3rd in Asia, according to the January 2012 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities which is based on the volume and visibility of the university on the web.

The ranking of NCKU this year hit the record high and it evidences the continuous endeavor of the faculty to achieve academic excellence, according to Hwung-Hweng Hwung, President of NCKU.

In January 2011, NCKU was ranked the 80th in the world, getting into the shortlist of the top 100 universities for the first time. NCKU currently stand moves up 17 places and shows a big jump in the academic development.

NCKU beat out Kyoto University, which was ranked the 3rd in Asia in 2011 for the first time and remained at the 3rd place this year. Asia’s top 5 universities are National Taiwan University (42nd), University of Tokyo (46th), NCKU (63rd), National Chiao Tung University (72nd), and Kyoto University (77th).

NCKU’s performance in four indicators are: its “scholar” ranked at the 19th, “rich files” at the 56th, “size” at the 24th, and “visibility” at the 287th. The position of rich files has moved substantially up 101 places.

Since 2008, NCKU has optimized its website by editing its content in both English and Chinese so that it may better relate to specific keywords and be more accessible to international users. It also set up the institutional repository to reflect the activities and accomplishments of the university.

The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is a ranking system for the world's universities based on a composite indicator that takes into account both the volume of the web contents and the visibility and impact of these web publications. The ranking is published by Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) located in Spain, and is updated every January and July.
