Widely known as the Father of Corona Virus, NCKU President Michael M.C. Lai was presented with the 2008 Lifelong Achievement Award from University of Southern California (USC) for his outstanding contributions to research, society and the human. President Lai will receive the Award at USC on April 7th from Steven B. Sample, President of USC, who said that Academician Lai was the pride of USC. When the news of President Lai receiving this Award was announced, the faculty and students of NCKU were very thrilled.
The Lifelong Achievement Award from USC is one of the awards given out once a year for outstanding academic achievements. The award winners are all of the elite of different fields in the academic world. Lifelong Achievement Award only goes to the retired professors who had taught at USC for over ten years, and had made great contributions to their careers, the University and communities. This Award is viewed as the highest honor for professors of the University. President Lai, the winner of the 2008 Award, will go to America for the awarding ceremony.
For over 30 years of teaching at USC, President Lai’s career had gone from Assistant Professor (1973-1978), to Associate Professor (1978-1983), Professor (1983-2002), and Outstanding Professor (2002-2007). President Lai feels strongly connected with USC because he had stayed with USC until 2007 when he came back to Taiwan to take the position as the President of NCKU.
President Lai’s specialties lie in virology, molecular biology and medicine. His contribution has largely focused on the research in the molecular biology and pathogenic mechanism of CoV, hepatitis C and hepatitis D virus that he had done in University of Southern California (1973-2006) and Academia Sinica (2003-2006). He is also a pioneer in the field of hepatitis D and a world-renowned pioneer in the field of microbiology virus, and his research results of CoV and hepatitis virus are highly acclaimed around the world.
When SARS was striking Taiwan and many other Asian countries, President Lai returned to Taiwan to help in resolving the situation, and his kind help had been a great example for all the scholars. Since then, he became known to the global media as the Father of Corona Virus. President Lai has devoted his expertise to the country and the well-being of humans. His devotion to the country and his achievements in science, medicine make him truly qualified for the Lifelong Achievement Award from USC.
The four awards for outstanding academic achievements include Research and Innovation Award, Outstanding Teaching Award, Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award and Lifelong Achievement Award. The last Award is given to at most four people each year.
