Economic growth and energy consumption revisited—Evidence from linear and nonlinear Granger causality
Ching-Fu Chen

Economists have been debating about the issues related to global warming and policies have been designed and implemented to address the global warming issue. For this purpose, the Kyoto Protocol has been enacted in 2005. According to the Protocol, 39 developed and developing countries in the world have to reduce their CO2 emission to 5% of their 1999 levels by 2012. To protect economic …

Influences of ZnO seed layer characteristics on the synthesis of ZnO nanowires
Jyh-Ming Ting

Single crystalline ZnO nanowires were synthesized on sputter deposited nanoscaled ZnO seed layers using a hydrothermal process at 90℃. Influences of the sputter deposited ZnO seed layer characteristics were examined. The nanowire diameters were found to depend on the size of the (002) grains of the seed layer. TEM analysis shows epitaxially growth of the nanowires from the columnar grains of …

Transient response of a transistor-based hydrogen sensor
Wen-Chau Liu

The transient phenomenon of hydrogen-sensing of a Pd-oxide-InGaP metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) is studied. Due to a high activation energy needed for initiating the reverse hydrogen releasing process, the responsive current signal during hydrogen detection does not always go back to the baseline. Over the high temperature region, the recovering curve can be divided …

Analysis and detection of patient-ventilator asynchrony via a computerized algorithm
Chang-Wen Chen

Around seventy percent of the patients admitted to our medical intensive care unit need mechanical ventilatory support. It is not unusual to detect patient-ventilator asynchrony as discrepancy between neurally and mechanically assisted breath is prone to occur. Ineffective triggering in expiratory phase (ITE) is documented to be the principal type of patient-ventilator asynchrony and manual …
